How Long is Bronchitis Contagious after taking Antibiotics

Bronchitis is a medical problem, concentrated in the bronchial tubes of the respiratory system. The mucous membrane of the bronchial tubes (or simply bronchi) is inflamed, thus affecting the air passage leading to the lungs. Depending upon the length of the illness episode, it can be acute or chronic bronchitis. The former is caused by infections, while the latter is developed due to inhaled irritants. With this brief highlight, let's discuss 'is bronchitis contagious' and 'how long is bronchitis contagious after taking antibiotics' in the following paragraphs.

Is Bronchitis Contagious?

According to bronchitis etiology, short-term or acute condition usually follows a common cold, flu or infections of the respiratory tract, while long-term or chronic bronchitis is manifested after exposure to respiratory irritants. So, is bronchitis contagious? Well, the answer is yes for acute bronchitis, and no for most of the chronic cases. When bronchitis is caused by infections (viral or bacterial), then only it is transmittable to other healthy individuals. Since acute bronchitis is caused due to cold, flu and alike infections, the pathogens can transmit in the same way like common cold and influenza viruses.

Is Bronchitis Contagious after Taking Antibiotics?

So, the common questions are, when is bronchitis contagious? And how long is bronchitis contagious after taking antibiotics? Bronchitis is most contagious in the first few days after the patient manifests notable symptoms. Considering the fact that viral infection is responsible for 90 percent of this acute respiratory disease, administering antibiotics is not always necessary. In other words, antibacterial therapy for bronchitis is applicable for only 5 - 10 percent patients. Also, antibiotics are recommended, if the person with acute bronchitis symptoms is suspected to have a secondary bacterial infection.

People having acute viral bronchitis recover after a few days, though dry cough may persist for a week or so. In general, patients diagnosed with acute bronchitis are given antibiotic treatment, if they remain symptomatic even after 10 - 14 days. Another identifiable sign of bacterial infection is productive cough with yellowish mucus. In addition to this, a sudden bout of acute bronchitis is not unusual in people having chronic bronchitis. For such a case, antibiotic medications are prescribed for prompt treatment. Even though the symptoms lessen after taking antibiotics, the contagiousness still continue for some days.

How Long is Bronchitis Contagious after taking Antibiotics?

As we have seen above, bacterial bronchitis is contagious even after advocating antibiotic medications. But, actually how long is bronchitis contagious after you start taking antibiotics? Acute bronchitis remains contagious, and the infected patient can spread pathogenic microbes to others as long as he/she continues to cough, or manifests symptoms. Thus, the same preventive measures are indicated to patients during and after the bronchitis treatment course. They should follow good respiratory hygiene, as directed by the doctor. It is best to remain indoors and take rest, until symptoms subside completely. That way, spreading of bronchitis can be minimized effectually.

With this information, I hope you have understood all about bronchitis transmission and how long is bronchitis contagious after taking antibiotics. The spreading of bronchitis can be prevented by adopting basic hygiene and personal cleanliness tips. Infected individuals should make sure that they use a hard towel to cover their mouth while coughing, and avoid sharing personal items (clothes, utensils) with others. Also, to avoid exacerbation of acute bronchitis to chronic cases, it is of utmost importance to quit smoking and minimize inhalation of pollutants as far as possible. With proper care from the patient's side, managing the symptoms and bronchitis containment can be easily achieved.

  3. My brother in law was diagnosed w/acute bronchitis last Sunday.
He was given antibiotics, prednisone, an inhaler, cough medicine, etc.
I bleached everything even looked at multiple times a day, sprayed the air with Lysol multiple times a day, etc.

So far me and my husband – his brother are OK - it's been eight days since the diagnosis in the start of medications.

We all live together in a three-bedroom apartment

Do you think that we are out of the clear? That we are not going to get sick from his illness anymore? Tomorrow morning I go on an airplane to Chicago and they keep getting scared that any minute now I'm going to start getting sick

  4. Bronchitis is a lower respiratory infection. People with bronchitis have trouble breathing in oxygen and air in the lungs, and heavy amounts of phlegm or mucus will form in the airways. The best medicine for treating bronchitis is rest and relaxation. There are also a variety of natural treatments that help relieve the symptoms related to bronchitis: Turmeric, Honey, Homeopathic remedies, Breathing exercises. I have read one article which has good information, I would like to suggest to read once: doctorshealthpress.com/general-health-articles/is-bronchitis-contagious

  5. Chronic Bronchitis can be diagnosed by your doctor. If you have been diagnosed with chronic bronchitis, see doctor if the following symptoms occur:

    Increased shortness of breath
    Chest pain with cough
Severe coughing that interferes with rest or sleep
    Wheezing
    Fever
Coughing up blood, rust-colored sputum, or an increased amount of green phlegm.

  8. The question is “ is bronchitis contagious “ So chronic bronchitis isn't contagious, but it's a severe health issue that needs a doctor's concern. Acute Bronchitis is contagious, which can last for 1 to 3 weeks? It's usually caused by cold or flu viruses. Since these viruses are contagious, acute bronchitis usually is, too.

  12. Acute bronchitis that develops due to a viral infection is the more contagious form of bronchitis. It is mainly caused by viruses that are responsible for cold and flu. These viruses can easily spread through cough and sneeze droplets of the infected people. It can also spread when the uninfected people touch an object where the infected droplets have fallen. Chronic bronchitis on the other hand is primarily affected by environmental factors and is hence rarely contagious.

  13. I've had bronchitis for more than a month. I was on Augmentin for 10 days, am using Albuterol as needed, and just finished a 6 day course of prednisone. I still get coughing fits and cough up a lot of mucus (green to yellow). I live with relatives and they are now sick. With the holidays, we'll be around other family and children. What xan we do to stop the spread and stop the cycle?

  15. So, I got bronchitis. Dr gave me a shot and antibiotics and an inhaler. One day off work is what the Dr note says. I'm in retail and work with public... guess I'll still be contagious when I go back to work tomorrow. This stuff is bad and I wouldn't want to give it to anyone.

  16. I GOT CURED FROM CHRONIC ASTHMATIC BRONCHITIS THROUGH HERBAL MEDICINE
I am sharing my story in an excited mood. It all started when I woke up with a bad cough. I felt it was because of the cold, maybe, I didn't put on enough warm clothing to sleep. I coughed all through that day. I waited a few days to see if it got worse and it did. I was coughing to the extent of dry heaves and I was vomiting. The cough hurt my throat severely. I finally ended up in the ER. They sent me home with antibiotics, an inhaler, and some pills to stop the coughing.
After 7 days, of worsening cough, I went back to the hospital where I was diagnosed of chronic asthmatic bronchitis. My wheezing became so loud that I found it difficult to sleep. When I went to the doctor I was given a Z-Pak, albuterol inhaler, oral steroids, cough pills which didn't do any good, and was told to take Mucinex. The more I take these medications, the worse my condition became.
I went in search for a cure without complications. I read stories of people who had worst cases of bronchitis and asthma. I was happy that people had gone through what I was going through and were cured by herbal medication.
I contacted the email address shared by someone who suffered bronchitis and was cured by Herbal Medication without complications. I received tremendous improvement after its use. The wheezing stopped totally and my sputum was no longer greenish. In case you have the same issue or you wish to help someone who has, you may contact Dr. Scott for his medication via drevanscott@gmail.com

  17. My husband was diagnosed several years ago with emphysema. He was able to quit smoking and we stayed on top of any illness. He has been hospitalized with pneumonia every year. His breathing has been getting worse but oxygen levels stay in the 97 to 98 range except when he's in hospital. For a year now he has been passing out. It is only for 1 to 3 minutes and was only when he would start coughing. The doctor changed his medications around but he passes out when breathing a bit hard. Also his feet swell up and are numb all the time. He then started using a cane. i searched for alternative treatment before i was introduced to Health herbal clinic by a friend here in the United states she told me they have successful herbal treatment to Emphysema and other lungs diseases. I spoke to few people who used the treatment here in USA and they all gave a positive response, so i immediately purchased the Emphysema herbal formula for my husband and he commenced usage, its totally unexplainable how all the symptoms totally dissapeared, his cough was gone and he no longer experience shortness of breath(dyspnea), contact this herbal clinic via their email healthherbalclinic@ gmail. com Or website www .healthherbalclinic. weebly. com. Herbs are truely gift from God
